NPS Cemetery Wall Repair

Atmos provided repair and restoration services for the brick masonry boundary wall surrounding the Fredericksburg National Cemetery, preserving notable elements of the historic site and landscape. The cemetery, encompassing 12 acres of battlefield, holds the remains of over 15,000 veterans. The project, representing the third phase of restoration efforts, involved repairing, repointing, and, when necessary, rebuilding portions of the historic masonry wall.

The current project encompassed 45 panels and associated piers, totaling approximately 1,015 feet in length with an exposed surface area of about 8,840 square feet. The scope of work encompassed various elements of the wall, including mortared brick wall panels, plinths, cornices, copings, and piers, with some panels navigating steep slopes and others serving as retaining walls at the northeast quadrant of the site. This restoration work ensures the preservation of this historic site’s integrity for future generations to appreciate and honor the memory of those interred at the Fredericksburg National Cemetery.
